The Volcano
Version franτaise
When you hear about The Volcano, it is always the Piton de la Fournaise, which means
Peak of blazing fire, because this volcano is still active.
It is a desert area, with lunar countrysides.
Crossing the Plaine des Sables (Plain of Sands) at sunrise on the way to the volcano
is an enchantment. The glowing colours of the sands change with
luminosity.
It is much better to arrive early in the morning (with very warm clothes), in order to
see the panorama. Otherwise, you might be caught by the fog. The view of the craters in
the sunshine is really beautiful from the Pas de Bellecombe.
Those who like trekking may climb the main crater in 5 or 6 hours, and even less for
good hikers.
Those who don't want to walk a lot may go down the Pas de Bellecombe and climb the little
crater, which is only a few meters high. But think about the way back, with this Pas de
Bellecombe to climb...
Important for hikers: The fog can appear in a few minutes, so do not leave the marked
path, or you will get lost.
